While tongue ties are widely discussed, lip ties where the upper lip is restricted by a tight or short frenulum can also interfere with breastfeeding. Signs include poor latch, slipping off the breast, clicking sounds while feeding, excessive gas or reflux, and nipple pain or damage for the mother. Babies may also struggle to maintain suction or fail to form a proper seal on the breast.
A lip tie is often overlooked, but a lactation consultant trained in oral assessments can identify subtle feeding issues related to it. They may refer you to a paediatric dentist or ENT specialist for diagnosis and treatment if needed. Gentle exercises, latch adjustments, and post-treatment support can dramatically improve feeding outcomes.
Early identification and intervention prevent long-term complications and preserve the breastfeeding journey. If you’re struggling despite trying common solutions, have your baby evaluated by a lactation consultant to rule out lip or tongue ties.
