Newborn Breastfeeding Schedule

In the first week, most newborns should breastfeed 8 to 12 times in a 24-hour period. Feeding this frequently helps stimulate milk production and ensures your baby is getting enough nutrition for growth and development. Newborns have tiny stomachs, so they need to eat often.

It’s normal for feeds to be irregular and for babies to nurse both for hunger and comfort. You should look for feeding cues like rooting, sucking on fists, and restlessness. Don’t wait until they scream their lungs out. A lactation consultant can help you recognize these cues, assess effective latch, and monitor signs of adequate intake such as weight gain and wet diapers.

Frequent feeding also helps establish a strong milk supply early on. If you’re unsure whether your baby is feeding enough, or you’re experiencing pain, a lactation expert can guide you through those early days with confidence and clarity.
