baby breastfeed after tongue tie release

Most babies can breastfeed immediately after a tongue tie release, also known as a frenotomy. In fact, direct breastfeeding right after the procedure is often encouraged, as it can help soothe the baby and begin the process of retraining the tongue to move freely.

Initially, the baby may need time to adjust to the new range of tongue motion. You might notice changes in latch, suction, or milk transfer right away or improvements may take a few days to weeks which is very normal. This is where a lactation consultant plays a huge role in helping with optimal latch techniques, post-procedure tongue exercises, and managing any soreness or breast-feeding aversion.

It’s important to be patient and consistent, offering plenty of skin-to-skin contact and support. Regular follow-ups with your lactation consultant ensure that healing is progressing well and feeding challenges are being addressed properly.
