Breastfeeding Hurting at First

Some tenderness is common during the first few days of breastfeeding, especially as your nipples adjust and the baby learns to latch. However, persistent or severe pain is not normal and usually signals an issue such as a shallow latch, tongue or lip tie, or poor positioning. Common signs include cracked or bleeding nipples, toe-curling pain, or pain that continues through the entire feeding. These issues can often be resolved quickly with the help of a lactation consultant. They can observe a feed, correct latch technique, check for oral restrictions, and help you find a comfortable position. The goal is for breastfeeding to be pain-free and enjoyable. Don’t ignore the pain—early support can prevent long-term problems and help you continue breastfeeding with confidence. Remember, breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt. If it does, get help early from a qualified lactation consultant to make feeding more comfortable for both you and your baby.
