Breastfeeding a premature baby or one admitted to the NICU can be emotionally and physically demanding. These infants often can’t feed directly at the breast right away due to medical complications, weak suck, or immature coordination.
However, breastmilk is especially critical for preemies it reduces the risk of infections and supports growth and development. A lactation consultant provides essential support by helping mothers establish and maintain milk supply through early and regular pumping, even before baby can latch. They can also guide paced bottle-feeding, kangaroo care (skin-to-skin), and transitioning to the breast when baby is ready.
Preemies often need more time and specialized strategies to learn effective breastfeeding, and a lactation consultant ensures the process is safe and personalized. With patience, persistence, and the right support, many NICU babies go on to breastfeed successfully either exclusively or in combination with expressed milk.
