Lactose Intolerant

Lactose overload and lactose intolerance in breastfed babies are often confused but are quite different. Lactose overload occurs when a baby gets too much foremilk (which is higher in lactose and lower in fat) and not enough hindmilk. This can cause symptoms like gassiness, green frothy stools, and fussiness.

It’s usually due to an oversupply or very frequent switching between breasts. Lactose intolerance, on the other hand, is rare in newborns and usually tied to medical conditions like galactosemia or temporary issues after gut infections. A lactation consultant can help identify the root cause by assessing feeding patterns, latch, and milk transfer.

Adjustments such as longer feeding on one breast or paced feeding may help resolve lactose overload. If symptoms persist, a consultant may refer you to a paediatrician for further evaluation. Proper diagnosis and feeding guidance ensure your baby’s digestion stays on track while preserving your breastfeeding relationship.
