Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue, often caused by a blocked milk duct or bacterial infection. It usually occurs in breastfeeding mothers and presents with symptoms like breast pain, redness, swelling, warmth, and sometimes fever or flu-like symptoms.
Mastitis can develop suddenly and may affect one or both breasts. It’s important to keep breastfeeding or pumping frequently even on the affected side to keep milk flowing and prevent further blockage. Apply warm & cold compresses, rest, stay hydrated, and massage the breast gently toward the nipple.
If symptoms persist beyond 24 hours or include high fever, contact your healthcare provider. You may need antibiotics to clear the infection. With early treatment and proper breastfeeding support from lactation consultant, most cases of mastitis resolve quickly and don’t affect long-term milk supply.
Timely care not only relieves pain but also helps you continue your breastfeeding journey smoothly.
