nipple pain

If you’re experiencing nipple pain, persistent itching, or a shiny rash on your nipples especially after breastfeeding then you might be dealing with a nipple yeast infection, also known as thrush. This condition is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a yeast that thrives in warm, moist areas, like the nipple and baby’s mouth.

Common signs include burning pain during or after feeds, flaky or shiny skin on the nipples, and deep shooting breast pain. It can occur after antibiotic use or cracked nipples, making it easier for yeast to take hold. Babies might also have white patches in their mouth or a diaper rash.

Prompt treatment is essential for both mother and baby to prevent reinfection. Antifungal creams or oral medications are commonly prescribed. If you’re unsure, consult a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and guidance.
