Foremilk and Hindmilk

Foremilk is the thinner, lactose-rich milk a baby receives at the start of a feed, while hindmilk comes later and is higher in fat and calories. If a baby receives mostly foremilk due to short or frequent switching between breasts, it can cause gassiness, green stools, and poor weight gain a situation known as foremilk-hindmilk imbalance.

This isn’t about two separate types of milk, but rather a gradual change in milk composition during a feeding. A lactation consultant helps correct this imbalance by recommending longer feeds on one breast before switching, improving latch, and managing oversupply if present. These adjustments ensure your baby receives a better mix of nutrients and digests milk more comfortably.

Foremilk-hindmilk imbalance is often temporary and can be easily resolved with proper breastfeeding technique and expert guidance. Addressing this early helps protect your milk supply and your baby’s overall feeding satisfaction.
